Pirates were democratic, elected their captains, and all decisions were made to benefit the crew. Often they voted on major decisions such as whether to attack a ship or where they’re going to sail next. Some historians describe pirate ships as the original republics!
Pirates divided any “booty” captured as well as responsibilities among the crew.
They offered an early version of workmen’s compensation and disability insurance. Pirates were paid well if disabled, and if killed a pirate’s family sometimes received payments.
Pirates often had a diverse culture: they came from all social classes and religions, many famous pirates were women, and often piracy offered slaves a rare opportunity for freedom and equality.
They had strict rules, the Pirate Code. While the pirate code varied from ship to ship, rules included lights out by eight or no fighting (between pirates) on the ship.
